Flashcard Activities

1)         Introduce Flashcards:          Drill the students on the flashcards

2)         Point and Say:   Teacher points at the flashcards, students say the  flashcards.

3)         Activity 1 – Stand Up, Sit Down
            The teacher shows a flashcard (eg: “neck”)
            The teacher says a word (eg: “eye” or “neck”)
            If the word matches the picture (eg: “neck” – “neck”),
            the students stand up, then sit down
            If the word does not match the picture (eg: “eye” – “neck”), 
            the students do nothing.

4)         Activity 2 – Matching
            Teacher prepares 6 or 8 flashcards showing PICTURES
            Teacher prepares 6 or 8 matching flashcards showing WORDS that
             match the pictures
            Stick the picture flashcards on left side, facing the board, with letters
            on the back (A-F)
            Stick the word flashcards on the right side, facing the board, with numbers
            on the back (1-8)
            Put students in teams of four to six students
            A team chooses ONE picture card on the left (eg: “B”)
            Teacher shows the card, and says “What is it?” (students: “leg”)
            The team then chooses ONE word card on the other side (eg: “3”)
            Teacher shows the card and says “Are they the same?”
            If they match, the team gets one point.
5)         Activity 3 – Snatch and Match
            Teacher places some flashcards on a chair or table, face up
            Students line up (2 or 3 teams)
            The teacher says a word.
The front students must run to the chair or table, grab the correct card,
and place it on the board.
            1 point for correct answers
            The “snatchers” then go to the back of the line

6)         Activity 4 – Teacher Scott’s Amazing Ball-Throwing Game
            Students line up (2 or 3 teams)
            Teacher puts some language items on the board (eg: flashcards, 
             pictures, diagram of a body)
            Teacher says one of the language items (eg: “shoulder”)
            The 2-3 students at the front throw a paper ball each at the language item
            1 point for correct answers / closest throw
            The “throwers” then go to the back of the line

Following Instructions

Following instructions is a very good way of seeing how much your students can understand, as their comprehension is tested in whether they carry out the activity correctly or not. It's important to make instructions clear and short, so that they don't become a memory test!
Classroom Ideas
Train your students to pay attention to instructions and to concentrate on understanding them.
  • ·         Use T.P.R. (Total Physical Response) activities using simple language of instruction (i.e. imperatives). The children have to carry out your commands physically. At a simple level, this could be 'Stand up!', 'Jump 3 times!' and so on; at higher levels, it could be 'Stand up, walk to the board and write the name of one classmate on the board. Then sit down again.' T.P.R. activities should be fun and involve concentration.
  • ·         Before you give instructions, make sure everyone is focused on you or on the appropriate text. Don't give instructions till everyone is ready and concentrating.
  • ·         When you give instructions, try getting the children to repeat what you said. This will provide clarification of their understanding of the language and the task you have set them to do.
  • ·         Take time to repeat instructions if necessary.
  • ·         Get students to check with each other, in their own language or in English, what they have to do after you have given the instructions. Then get one student to tell you and make sure everyone agrees.
  • ·         Get a student to demonstrate what they are going to do on the board with an example.
  • ·         Try dictating instructions. You will then provide spelling and writing practice at the same time.

Rangoli is a popular art form among Indian women.  Rangoli are painted on the ground in front of houses using colored rice powder -- sometimes supplemented by flower petals and other colorful materials.  Rangoli are typically painted during the tamil month of Maarkazhi (between December 15th and January 15th).
